While we wait for the arrival of Baby Hullah (who remains nameless for the moment still...it's not a secret; we just don't know!), I thought I would take some time to explain the meaning of his big brother Luke's name.
As you may or may not know, in March of 2008, we experienced a miscarriage during a spring break mission trip to Mexico City. I was only 7 or 8 weeks pregnant, but it was a difficult loss nonetheless. I remember singing the words "You give and take away. You give and take away," soon after that during a worship service at our church in Denver. The song continues with, "My heart will truly say, Lord blessed be your name, " and this song became true for my heart and mind as well. The following September, we found out we were pregnant again. Our previous loss caused us to hold loosely to this little one yet be hopeful for a full term pregnancy as well. When we began talking about what we might name the baby, the name Luke came up, and we both liked it for various reasons. 1. Luke means "light". We both appreciate this significant meaning and hope that Luke will walk with Jesus and be a light to others. (Matthew 5:14-16) 2. The gospel of Luke (a favorite of Darci's) and the book of Acts was written by Luke, a doctor. A physician. A "healer". The Lord was definately using this pregnancy as a healing experience for us. 3. Honestly, we didn't have any issues with anyone else we knew named Luke. :) We liked each of them very much. At 20 weeks, we had an ultrasound and found out we were having a boy. I (Darci) knew at that moment he was "Luke". Brett also desired for the name to be adaptable so the child could have choices of what he wanted to be called, so Luke's formal name became Lukas. His middle name also has significant meaning to us. Franklin means "free man". Soon after I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior in college, my favorite verse became Galatians 5:1 which says, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Brett had first suggested the name and liked it for various reasons...his dad's middle name is Frank, and again, Franklin is adaptable. We even joked with others about calling the baby Frankie Hullah (kind of sounded like a mafia member). :) Also, Darci's dad had been an elementary physical education teacher at Franklin Elementary most of his career. Lukas Franklin Hullah was born on May 26, 2009. And now at almost 2 1/2 years old, he also awaits the arrival of his little brother.
